WHEN MUSIC AND FASHION COLLIDE

(the article)

The way you dress often informs the first impression you give off to people; this is especially true for musicians. With the Fort Collins music scene being relatively small, yet diverse, I wanted to dive into the different fashion trends I've seen. While plenty of artists still opt for the typical tee-shirt and jeans look, I sought out musicians who were breaking this trend and showing their true colors through fashion.

Although she now resides in Oakland, CA, AJ Frankson of Janet Earth had a large impact on the Fort Collins music scene, especially when it comes to fashion. Taking inspiration from Illuminati Hotties, Frankson and her band, Janet Earth, opted for a blue shorts and white t-shirt look. Frankson even went as far as to hand-stitch a little Earth with the word "Janet" onto each band member's shirt. Throughout her time as an artist, her style has continued to evolve, gradually getting into a more edgy black faux leather and see-through shirt look.

Most artists in the Fort Collins DIY scene tend to find their show outfits also in a DIY fashion. For Katie Shriver, also known as Twin Riverz, thrifted fashion is her job, literally. Working at a local thrift store, Shriver keeps her show and everyday style updated while she works. Being able to see most clothing before it hits the racks, Shriver has first pick. While at work, she has noticed that a lot of the people she knows from the DIY music scene shop there.

Known locally as "the Bowie of the music scene," Jae Smith has begun experimenting more with makeup and androgynous style. Their band, Hotel Wifi, has only started playing more live shows recently, but has chosen a sparkly red rose shirt for performing. On top of that, they have experimented with a few makeup styles, including the half face look, different eyeliner looks and a wifi symbol.

While this is just a little peek into fashion within the Fort Collins music scene, the styles are constantly evolving. As different trends pop up and artists navigate their sound, their style will continue to grow.
